Main Duties & Responsibilities

The CNC Machining Manager is responsible for daily management of performance and quality for shift supervisors and hourly union employees, supervises the shift to which he is assigned. Manages and coordinates maintenance activities and manufacturing engineering related to CNC machining. Partners with Engineering, Manufacturing, Production Control, Method Planning, Quality and Sales. Creates and manages departmental budget. Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner focusing on a root cause correction. Looks for ways to improve and promote quality in product and procedures. Creates and maintain production related reports such as: time and attendance, productivity, tool usage, product quality, and safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and manages daily performance for variation and improvements to scheduled demand.
  • Understands and utilizes KPI measurements to help drive improvements.
  • Effectively utilize DNC software in the CNC department to find continuous improvement opportunities
  • Motivates employees to achieving goals in a fast-paced environment.
  • Solve machine and machining related problems as well as coach workers, supervisors, and technicians.
  • Works closely with Production Control to optimally align work on all machines to generate the fastest throughput of the product needed.
  • Ensures all machines are running properly and that all preventative maintenance is performed to schedule.
  • Interpret specifications, blueprints, and work orders to assist employees as needed. Train proper gage utilization and measurement techniques.
  • Strong focus on product quality, throughput rates, toll usage, and machine up-time.
  • Perform periodic time studies on machines to understand the product machining requirements and identify where improvements can be made.
  • Must have product flow knowledge in terms of run rates, speeds and feeds, and tool usage tracking.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
  • Develop capital equipment requests and justifications for machine centers, inspection equipment, and any other ancillary equipment required.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent preferably in Engineering or Business; with five years or more related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, blueprints, work orders, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Ability:
Must be proficient in math with the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as tolerances, compound geometry, percentages, proportions, areas, circumferences, and volumes. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Measurement Skills:
Must be familiar with various measurement type equipment for assuring product quality be employees. Typical equipment would include comparators, micrometers, calipers, height gages, protrusion gages, etc.

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. The Supervisor will be required to learn in house system management program to become proficient and report generation and product load and tracking.

Certificates and Licenses:
Six Sigma certification preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervises up to 25 employees in the CNC department, and 2 off shift supervisors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Rotational weekend coverage is required when overtime is worked on Saturday or Sunday.
